Whitefish has a proud history and a rich timber and railroad heritage.

It is unknown when the first settlers came to this special place we call Whitefish. In the mid 1850’s trappers working the area found Indians catching native Whitefish from the lake, thus the name Whitefish.

As Whitefish has declined as a timber and railroading community, it has risen as a retirement and recreational haven. The Whitefish community has gained international recognition as a special place to get away from the rat race, a special place to live and raise a family. Whitefish its people, and its natural attractions have carried it through a number of evolutionary stages. The legend is that Whitefish is naturally inviting and a special place that will stay in your heart forever.

Today, Whitefish is an island of culture in an ocean of mountain recreation. It provides the unique opportunity to spend your days surrounded by nature on the ski slopes, hitting the trail, or on the rivers and your evenings in town enjoying live music or live theatre.
